House Number Numerology

A house number is read twice. First as it is written — 47, 26, 112 — which Chaldean numerology calls the compound, and second as the single digit it reduces to, which is the root. Most calculators throw the compound away and give you only the root, which is why two very different addresses so often come back with the same answer.

Both readings are on every page below. Where they agree, the number is straightforward. Where they disagree — and they disagree on about a fifth of the numbers between 1 and 100 — the disagreement is the useful part, and it is what a reader deciding between two flats is actually trying to find out.

The numbers the tradition flags

These are the compounds the Chaldean tradition states as warnings rather than as neutral or favourable readings. It is a short list, and the honest reading of it is that the other eighty-odd numbers carry no such flag. A flagged number is not a reason to walk away from a home — see the limits below — but it is worth knowing that the tradition is not neutral about it before someone sells you a remedy for one.

Have an address already?

The calculator handles flat numbers with a block letter (E/422, C-101, 3B) and shows the total both with and without the letter, because the two readings differ and practitioners disagree about which one governs.

What this cannot tell you

A house number is arithmetic on an address. It cannot tell you whether you will be happy, prosperous or safe in a home, and nobody can derive that from a number. We will not tell you to reject a house, and we will not sell you a remedy for one. What the number gives you is a reading of temperament — whether the place suits how you already live — and that is worth knowing before you sign, alongside the things that actually decide it: light, water, ventilation, noise, commute and cost.
