How to Calculate Your Mulank From Your Date of Birth
Your lucky numbers are worked out from two figures in your birth date: the Mulank, from the day alone, and the Bhagyank, from the whole date. Nothing else is required.
The manual method
- Take the day of the month you were born. If it is two digits, add them together and keep reducing until one digit remains. That is your Mulank.
- Now take the complete date — day, month and year — and add every single digit together.
- Reduce that total to one digit, except when it lands on 11, 22 or 33, which are kept as master numbers. That is your Bhagyank, or Life Path.
- Your Mulank and Bhagyank are your primary lucky numbers. The numbers friendly to them in the ank-maitri table are your secondary ones.
Worked example — born 1992-03-14
- Born on the 14th: 1 + 4 = 5
- Mulank: 5
- Using every digit of 14-03-1992: 1 + 9 + 9 + 2 + 0 + 3 + 1 + 4 = 29
- 2 + 9 = 11
- Bhagyank: 11
What Mulank means
Mulank is a compound of two Hindi words: mul, meaning root, and ank, meaning number. It is the root number of a birth date, taken from the day of the month alone and reduced to a single digit. Someone born on the 23rd has a Mulank of 5, because 2 + 3 = 5.
Because it uses only the day, the Mulank is the one figure in Vedic numerology you can work out for anybody whose birthday you know, without their year or their birth time. That is why it is the number most often quoted in conversation, and the one most Indian numerology writing starts from.
Each Mulank is assigned a ruling graha. That assignment is fixed and is the same on every page of this site — it is read from one table, not restated per page.
Mulank and Bhagyank are not the same number
These are confused more often than any other pair in Indian numerology, and the difference is simple. The Mulank comes from the day of birth only. The Bhagyank — also called the life path number — comes from the entire date: day, month and year added together and reduced.
A person born on 1992-03-14 has a Mulank of 5 from the day alone, and a Bhagyank of 11 from the full date. Both are correct, and they describe different things. The Mulank is read as everyday temperament; the Bhagyank as the longer direction.
The two frequently disagree, and that disagreement is usually the interesting part rather than an error to be resolved. A Mulank 5 with a Bhagyank 4 is someone whose instinct is to move and whose circumstances reward staying — a tension worth naming rather than averaging away. The calculator above returns both, with the arithmetic for each shown.
What each Mulank is taken to mean
Each entry below gives the ruling graha, the numbers treated as friendly to it in the ank-maitri table, and a one-line characterisation. The ruling planets and the friendship lists are read from the same tables the compatibility pages use, so nothing here can contradict them.
Mulank 1 — ruled by Sun
Decides quickly and dislikes being managed. Reads as leadership when it works and as impatience when it does not. Friendly numbers in the ank-maitri table: 1, 3, 5, 9. Mulank 1 in full.
Mulank 2 — ruled by Moon
Reads a room before it speaks. Cooperative and sensitive to atmosphere, which makes it steady in partnership and slow under pressure to choose. Friendly numbers in the ank-maitri table: 1, 2, 6, 7. Mulank 2 in full.
Mulank 3 — ruled by Jupiter
Expressive and quick to teach or perform. Its risk is spreading across too many interests to finish any of them. Friendly numbers in the ank-maitri table: 1, 3, 6, 9. Mulank 3 in full.
Mulank 4 — ruled by Rahu
Works to a system and distrusts shortcuts. Reliable on long projects; uncomfortable when rules keep changing. Friendly numbers in the ank-maitri table: 4, 5, 6, 8. Mulank 4 in full.
Mulank 5 — ruled by Mercury
Adapts fast and gets bored faster. Suits work with variety, travel or negotiation built into it. Friendly numbers in the ank-maitri table: 1, 3, 5, 9. Mulank 5 in full.
Mulank 6 — ruled by Venus
Organised around people and home. Generous and aesthetic, with a tendency to carry responsibility that was never asked for. Friendly numbers in the ank-maitri table: 2, 3, 6, 9. Mulank 6 in full.
Mulank 7 — ruled by Ketu
Wants to understand the mechanism rather than the result. Reflective, private, and uneasy with pure salesmanship. Friendly numbers in the ank-maitri table: 1, 2, 5, 7. Mulank 7 in full.
Mulank 8 — ruled by Saturn
Patient with slow returns and comfortable with structure and money. The classical texts treat it as the hardest number and the most durable. Friendly numbers in the ank-maitri table: 4, 5, 6, 8. Mulank 8 in full.
Mulank 9 — ruled by Mars
Direct and energetic, with a strong sense of fairness. Effective when the cause is clear and restless when it is not. Friendly numbers in the ank-maitri table: 1, 3, 6, 9. Mulank 9 in full.
What the Mulank will not tell you
It will not tell you what is going to happen. A birth day is a single digit and it cannot encode an event, a date or an outcome, and anyone presenting it that way is guessing. This site states that position in full on its methodology page and applies it everywhere, including in the chat assistant, which refuses prediction questions outright.
It also will not settle a marriage on its own. Mulank pairing is one reading among several, and the name numbers frequently disagree with it. Where they do, we publish both rather than blending them into a single reassuring percentage.
What this number does not tell you
A lucky number is a preference, not a guarantee. Numerology has nothing useful to say about lottery draws, betting or any game of chance, and this site will not offer numbers for that purpose.
Frequently Asked Questions
Which matters more, the Mulank or the Bhagyank?
The Mulank is read as the everyday temperament and tends to show in small daily matters. The Bhagyank is read as the longer arc. Where they differ, most practitioners weigh the Bhagyank for major decisions and the Mulank for routine ones.
Can I use my lucky number for the lottery?
No, and you should treat anyone offering that as unserious. Numerology describes temperament and timing, not random draws. Using it to pick lottery numbers is a way to lose money with extra steps.
Do lucky numbers change over time?
Your Mulank and Bhagyank never change — they come from a fixed birth date. What changes is your Personal Year and Personal Month, which shift the numbers that are favourable right now.
