Which Rudraksha Mukhi Suits You, By Your Date of Birth

This gives the rudraksha attached to the graha ruling your Mulank, with the whole table shown so you can check it. Your date of birth is enough; a birth time only matters for the second method further down.

The manual method

  1. Reduce your day of birth to a single digit. Born on the 23rd gives 2 + 3 = 5. That is your Mulank.
  2. Find its ruling graha: 1 Sun, 2 Moon, 3 Jupiter, 4 Rahu, 5 Mercury, 6 Venus, 7 Ketu, 8 Saturn, 9 Mars.
  3. Take that graha's bead: Sun 1 mukhi, Moon 2, Mars 3, Mercury 4, Jupiter 5, Venus 6, Saturn 7, Rahu 8, Ketu 9.
  4. Note that the two tables do not line up. Mulank 3 is ruled by Jupiter, and Jupiter's bead is the 5 mukhi — not the 3. Assuming the mukhi equals the Mulank is wrong for six of the nine.

The full mapping, Mulank to bead

When the planetary mapping was actually settled

The association between a mukhi count and a presiding deity is old and appears in the Shiva Purana and the Padma Purana. The association between a mukhi and a PLANET is not — it was systematised in the twentieth century, largely from the 1970s onward, and practitioners still disagree on several beads. We publish the mapping we use so you can see exactly what the recommendation rests on, and we are not going to present a modern systematisation as ancient scripture.

This matters commercially as well as intellectually. Rudraksha is sold on the strength of the mapping, and the beads that attract the highest prices are the rarest faces — which are also where substitution and carving are most common. Knowing that the planetary layer is a modern systematisation, and the deity layer is the old one, is the difference between buying informedly and buying on atmosphere.

The second method, and why it disagrees

There is a second route: your Moon sign gives a rashi, the rashi has a lord, and that lord has its own bead. It needs a birth time, because the Moon changes rashi roughly every two and a quarter days — on about 43% of days the date alone does not settle it.

The two methods disagree far more often than they agree, because they start from different things: one from the day of the month, the other from where the Moon actually was. Someone born on 12 April 1992 at noon IST has Mulank 3, pointing to the 5 mukhi, and a Karka Moon, pointing to the 2 mukhi.

We show both and name the disagreement rather than averaging them into a single answer that neither tradition supports. If a site gives you one number without telling you which method produced it, you cannot check it and neither can they.

What we do not ask you for

A birth place. The Moon's position here is geocentric, so a location changes nothing except the conversion from your local clock to UTC — which is why the form asks for a time zone rather than a city. Asking for coordinates would imply a precision this method does not use.

Your full birth date, stored. The calculation happens in your browser. Nothing about when you were born is written to a URL or kept after you leave the page.

What this number does not tell you

A rudraksha is a seed, and tradition attaches it to a graha. It is not a treatment. Nothing here will tell you a bead cures an illness, raises an income or removes an obstacle, because none of that can be shown, and a page that promises it is selling rather than explaining.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the mukhi the same as my Mulank?

No, and this is the commonest mistake. The Mulank points to a graha, and the graha points to a bead — two steps, not one. Mulank 3 is Jupiter and Jupiter's bead is the 5 mukhi. Only Mulank 1, 2 and 6 happen to land on a bead with the same number.

Which rudraksha is the most powerful?

We are not going to rank them, because there is no basis on which we could. The 1 mukhi is the rarest and most expensive, which is a fact about the market rather than about the bead. Rarity and price are not the same thing as suitability.

Do I need my birth time?

Not for the Mulank method — the day of the month is enough. The Moon-sign method does need it, and where a time is missing we show every rashi the Moon occupied that day rather than picking one.

Can wearing the wrong rudraksha harm me?

We have seen no basis for that claim and we are not going to repeat it. It appears widely, and it is worth noticing that it appears most often on pages selling beads — a warning that the wrong choice is dangerous is also an argument for paying someone to choose.
