Baby Name Numerology Calculator
Enter a name you are considering and your baby's date of birth, and this checks the name's Chaldean number against the child's own Mulank — so you can compare shortlisted names before you register one.
Step by step: calculate a baby's name number
- Write the name exactly as it will be used day to day, not a longer formal version.
- Give every letter its Chaldean value and add them together.
- Reduce the total to a single digit by adding its digits repeatedly.
- Work out the baby's Mulank by reducing the day of the month they were born.
- Check the name number against the Mulank in the friendship table below. A friendly number is the easier pairing; a neutral one is workable.
Worked example — Aarav
- Letters: A=1, A=1, R=2, A=1, V=6
- Total: 11
- 1 + 1 = 2
- Name number: 2
Chaldean letter-number chart
- 1 — A, I, J, Q, Y
- 2 — B, K, R
- 3 — C, G, L, S
- 4 — D, M, T
- 5 — E, H, N, X
- 6 — U, V, W
- 7 — O, Z
- 8 — F, P
Chaldean assigns no letter the value 9 — it is treated as sacred. A name can still reduce to 9.

Mulank and Bhagyank — the two numbers a birth date gives
Mulank (root number)
Comes from the day of the month alone, reduced to a single digit. Anyone born on the 8th, 17th or 26th of any month has Mulank 8. It is the birth-day signature, and it is the number most Indian numerologists weigh first when a name is being chosen — which is why it counts double in the score on this page.
Bhagyank (destiny number)
Comes from the whole date — every digit of the day, month and year added together and reduced. It is particular to the full date rather than shared by everyone born on that day of the month, and it is read here as the supporting number.
The order matters. Mulank 8 with Bhagyank 7 is not the same reading as Mulank 7 with Bhagyank 8 — the friendship table is symmetric, but the Mulank is weighted double, so which number sits in which slot changes the ranking.
What "friendly" means here
Every number from 1 to 9 is ruled by a planet — 1 by the Sun, 2 by the Moon, 3 by Jupiter, and so on down the table above. Vedic numerology inherits the planetary relationships of Jyotish: some grahas work easily together (mitra, friend), some are indifferent to each other (sama, neutral), and some pull against each other (shatru, enemy). A name number is called friendly on this site when it scores 60 or above out of 100 against the birth number on that table, neutral when the two planets are indifferent, and unfriendly below that. The full table and how each score is set are published on the methodology page.
Two cautions on reading it. A friendly number is the easier pairing, not a requirement — most names sit in the friendly or neutral band for most dates, so a friendly result is weak evidence rather than a green light. And a number friendly with the Mulank alone is a looser claim than one friendly with the Mulank and the Bhagyank; for a typical date, seven or eight of the nine numbers are friendly with one or the other, which rules out almost nothing.
What a name number cannot decide
A name number describes the impression a name makes. It does not determine a child's character, health or future, and no name is unlucky enough to be worth rejecting one the family loves. Treat this as a tiebreaker between names you are already happy with.
A shortlist worked through properly
This page gives you the numbers. The baby name report takes your child's birth date and works a shortlist against it, showing the arithmetic for each name rather than just a verdict.
Frequently asked questions
How do I choose a lucky baby name using numerology?
First, calculate the baby's Mulank (from birth date) and Bhagyank (from full date of birth). Then check that the name's numerological value — calculated using the Chaldean or Pythagorean chart — falls in the list of friendly numbers for the baby's Mulank and Bhagyank. Our free calculator above does this instantly.
Should I use Chaldean or Pythagorean for baby names?
Most Indian numerologists prefer the Chaldean system for baby names because it's based on sound vibrations rather than alphabetical sequence. However, checking both systems gives you the most complete picture. Ideally, the name should be friendly in both.
When should I finalize my baby's name?
If you know the expected due date, you can use it to calculate the likely Mulank and Bhagyank and start shortlisting names in advance. If the baby is already born, use the actual date of birth for the most accurate results.
What if my chosen baby name is not compatible?
Small spelling adjustments can shift the name number without changing how the name sounds. For example, 'Aarav' (name number 5 in Chaldean) vs 'Arav' (name number 4) — the sound is nearly identical but the vibration differs. Our calculator shows the exact letter breakdown so you can experiment.
Do middle names and surnames matter in numerology?
Yes, the full name (first + middle + last) creates the overall name vibration. However, the first name carries the most weight since it's used most frequently. Many parents focus on getting the first name right and consider the full name as a secondary check.
Can I check multiple name options at once?
Use the calculator above to check each name option one by one. Simply enter a different name and click 'Check This Name' again. The birth date stays filled in so you can quickly compare multiple names.
