How to Calculate Your Soul Urge Number
The Soul Urge — also called the heart's desire number — is worked out from the vowels in your name and nothing else. All it needs is the spelling you use.
The manual method
- Write out your name and strike out every consonant, keeping only A, E, I, O and U.
- Give each remaining vowel its Chaldean value: A = 1, E = 5, I = 1, O = 7, U = 6.
- Add those values together.
- Reduce the total to a single digit by adding its digits repeatedly. That digit is your Soul Urge number.
Worked example — Aarav Mehta
- Vowels only: A=1, A=1, A=1, E=5, A=1
- Total: 1 + 1 + 1 + 5 + 1 = 9
- Soul Urge: 9
What this number does not tell you
The Soul Urge is read as what motivates a person privately, as distinct from how they come across. It is not a prediction and not a measure of character quality — a person is not better or worse for having any particular number.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between Soul Urge and Personality number?
Soul Urge uses the vowels; the Personality number uses the consonants of the same name. One is read as inward motivation, the other as outward impression. Together with the full name number they describe three different angles on the same name.
Is Y a vowel in this calculation?
This calculator treats Y as a consonant, which is the common Chaldean convention. Some practitioners count Y as a vowel when it carries the vowel sound, as in Lyla. If you want to test that reading, calculate it both ways and see which total you find more convincing.
Does Soul Urge change if I change my name?
Yes — the number is derived from the letters, so a different spelling gives a different result. That is precisely why name-correction exists as a practice, and why the number should always be quoted alongside the exact spelling it came from.
