What Your Personality Number Is, and How to Calculate It
The Personality number — sometimes called the dream number — is worked out from the consonants in your name and nothing else. It is read as the impression a name makes before anyone knows you. All it needs is the spelling you actually use.
The manual method
- Write out your name and strike out every vowel, keeping only the consonants. This calculator counts Y as a consonant, which is the usual Chaldean convention.
- Give each remaining letter its Chaldean value: A, I, J, Q, Y = 1. B, K, R = 2. C, G, L, S = 3. D, M, T = 4. E, H, N, X = 5. U, V, W = 6. O, Z = 7. F, P = 8.
- Add those values together. That total is the compound, and Chaldean practice reads it before reducing.
- Reduce the total by adding its digits until one remains. That digit is your Personality number.
Worked example — Aarav Mehta
- Consonants only: R=2, V=6, M=4, H=5, T=4
- Total: 2 + 6 + 4 + 5 + 4 = 21
- 2 + 1 = 3
- Personality number: 3
It is the exact complement of your Soul Urge
The Soul Urge uses the vowels, the Personality uses the consonants, and between them they use every letter of the name exactly once. Neither uses a letter twice and neither leaves one out. That makes them two halves of one sum rather than two separate readings.
So the two totals must add to the full-name total, every time. For Aarav Mehta the vowels come to 9 and the consonants to 21, and together they are 30 — the name number's compound. If a site hands you three numbers whose first two totals do not add to the third, one of them is wrong, and this is the quickest check you can run on any calculator including ours.
The reduced digits do not add that neatly, because reducing is not linear. Aarav Mehta reads Soul Urge 9 and Personality 3, which do not sum to the name number 3. Compare the totals, never the digits.
Why Y counts as a consonant here
This calculator treats Y as a consonant. Some practitioners read it as a vowel where it carries the vowel sound, which moves the letter from the Personality total to the Soul Urge total and changes both.
Y is worth 1 in the Chaldean table. Moving one Y across therefore changes each total by exactly 1, and because reducing a total is the same as taking its remainder on division by nine, a shift of one always changes the digit. There is no name containing a Y where the two conventions agree on both numbers.
96 of the 648 names in our corpus contain a Y, which is 14.8%. If yours does, calculate it both ways — one of the two is the reading your practitioner is using, and you cannot tell which from the number alone.
How the nine personality numbers fall
Across the 648 names in our corpus the commonest Personality number is 9 at 12.5% and the least common is 3 at 8.6%, against the 11.1% an even spread would give.
That is a flatter distribution than the Soul Urge, which bunches hard because Indian names carry so many As and A is worth 1 — and roughly as flat as the full name number, whose commonest digit takes 13.3%. So a Personality number discriminates between people better than a Soul Urge number does, which is the opposite of how the two are usually sold.
What this number does not tell you
The Personality number describes the impression a name tends to make, not a verdict on character. It is the weakest of the three name numbers taken alone, because it uses only part of the name, and it is worth reading beside the Soul Urge and the full name number rather than instead of them.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between the Personality and the Soul Urge number?
They use opposite halves of the same name. The Soul Urge is the vowels and is read as inward motivation; the Personality is the consonants and is read as the outward impression. Their two totals add to the full-name total, so they are complementary rather than competing.
Is Y a vowel or a consonant in this calculation?
This calculator counts Y as a consonant, which is the usual Chaldean convention, so a Y contributes to the Personality number. Some practitioners move it to the vowels where it carries the vowel sound. Since Y is worth 1, moving it always changes both numbers — there is no name with a Y where the two conventions agree.
Should I use my full name or the name people call me?
Use the name in active use, the one you sign and answer to, because Chaldean reads a name as a repeated sound rather than a legal record. Calculate the full name too and keep both labelled; a second word changes the result unless its own letters total a multiple of nine.
Does the Personality number change if I change my spelling?
Only if the consonants change. Adding or removing a vowel moves your Soul Urge and your full name number and leaves the Personality number exactly where it was. That is worth knowing before paying for a name correction aimed at this particular figure.
